The Fabulous French Riviera
More than a match for its legendary reputation, the French Riviera offers visitors beautiful weather and head-turning elegance.
In a world of incredible destinations, the French Riviera is blessed more than most. Playground of the rich and famous and home to the most glamourous of film festivals and a unique Formula One circuit, it boasts 300 days of glorious sunshine a year and there's wealth of distractions and charming village hideaways to discover.
Nice and the Bay of Angels
Gazing from the cooling shade of Mount Boron's olive and carob trees, over the chic city of Nice and the Bay of Angels, it's not hard to see why this spot is believed to have been inhabited since 400,000 BC. Be sure to head into town and order an authentic, never-better niҫoise salad or sample the socca – a delicious chickpea pancake and another local speciality.
St Paul-de-Vence and Antibes
An excursion to St Paul-de-Vence and Antibes is a must for art lovers. St Paul de Vence is a charming, fortified village perched on a hilltop. Disarmingly beautiful in its own right, it's been a favourite destination for a host of creative spirits that includes Marc Chagall, Orson Wells and Yves Montand.
The resort town of Antibes is a grander affair, with its striking star-shaped citadel standing guard above the harbour. F Scott Fitzgerald wrote ‘Tender is the Night’ based on time in Antibes, and Picasso lived here just after World War Two. He said that if you wanted to see the work from his Antibes Period you had to do it in the town itself. Naturally, then, the Musée Picasso is a must-see.
Cannes and Monte Carlo
For an intoxicating taste of the high life, visits to Cannes and Monte Carlo are essential. Take your place in a café, order a glass of pastis and admire the luxury super yachts in the harbour and the beautiful people that promenade here.
