Oval-shaped Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. It measures about 110 miles in length, has an average width of about 36 miles and is generally considered to be a fairly shallow body of water, with an average depth of around 12 metres. It is believed that many years ago, the lake was part of an ocean bay which was sealed off by a volcanic eruption.
Today Lake Nicaragua and its shores are an important habitat for a variety of animal species. Many birds can be spotted here including egrets and herons, cormorants and kites, and lots of different types of fish thrive in the glistening waters. The most famous resident is perhaps the freshwater shark. It is thought that this marine predator swam inland from the Caribbean Sea and evolved thanks to its high tolerance of fresh water, unfortunately the population is dwindling and sightings are very rare.
More than 400 islands covered in lush vegetation rise from the waters of the lake. Most are close to the city of Granada and from here you can enjoy a leisurely cruise around them, appreciating their beauty and tranquillity as you go.
A controversial plan is in place to create the Nicaragua Canal, a shipping route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Whether it will ever be built remains to be seen, but if it is completed, its path will take it through Lake Nicaragua. So now is the time to admire the natural beauty of this great lake, before it is changed forever.
